Why does vacuum pump oil turn white? How often should sealing rings be replaced, and what will it cost? Here is a simple guide to everyday service and maintenance for freeze dryer.

What are the common consumables for a KEMOLO freeze dryer?

The main consumables are related to the vacuum system, refrigeration system, and sealing parts. Common items include vacuum pump oil, Roots pump oil, vacuum filter elements, vacuum-release filter elements, door sealing rings, and refrigeration coarse oil filters, fine oil filters, high-pressure filters, and low-pressure filters. Depending on the machine configuration, refrigerant oil, refrigerant, temperature sensors, vacuum sensors, and heating elements may also be needed.

Vacuum pump oil and Roots pump oil need particular attention. The manual recommends changing them immediately when they become dirty. Under normal conditions, replace them every three months. When water vapor mixes with pump oil, the oil can turn milky white. This is oil emulsification.

Once the oil emulsifies, the vacuum level may rise, evacuation may take longer, and drying efficiency can suffer. Do not keep running the machine as usual. First check the chamber door, valves, and sealing rings for leakage. Then check whether there is standing water or excessive moisture inside the chamber. If the oil is seriously contaminated, replace it promptly. When appropriate, recovered oil can be treated with an oil-water separator and reused according to service guidance.

How often should sealing rings be replaced?

There is no single fixed replacement date for a sealing ring. Its condition and the vacuum performance matter most. Check regularly for hardening, cracks, deformation, deep compression marks, or dirt on the sealing surface. If the machine cannot reach the required vacuum or the vacuum curve fluctuates, do not assume the pump is the only cause. Aging door and valve seals are also common causes.

With normal use and proper cleaning, a full inspection once a year is recommended. Replace the sealing ring as soon as poor sealing is found; there is no need to wait for complete failure. Keeping the sealing surface clean and avoiding trapped product or packaging material when closing the door will also extend seal life.
