The rate of sublimation is heavily influenced by the thickness of the material load. Therefore, the most important specification to examine when reviewing a freeze dryer quotation is the shelf area. As a practical guideline, 1m² of shelf area is typically recommended for processing around 10kg (or approximately 10 liters) of raw material per batch.
Over the past 3 to 5 years, we have observed a growing number of manufacturers entering the freeze dryer market with little or no prior experience in this field, driven primarily by short‑term profit opportunities. Lacking the necessary technical foundation, these suppliers frequently inflate their performance specifications. For example, it is not uncommon to see a machine with only 1 m² of shelf area rated for 15 kg, 25 kg, or even 40 kg — which is technically unattainable in practice.
When capacity ratings are exaggerated, the actual drying time often doubles or triples, resulting in significantly lower throughput and substantially higher energy consumption per batch. This undermines operational efficiency and ultimately defeats the purpose of investing in a freeze dryer in the first place.
